Space Exploration:The Race to the Moon

The space race was started by the cold war. It’s a space race between the United States of America and the Soviet Union. And it accelerated with a focus on the Moon[1].This includes many important firsts. Including the first photographs of the hidden side of the Moon, the longest burn and the first human landing on the Moon in the year 1969 by the Americans. All during the Gemini program,NASA had been preparing for a big project called the Apollo[2]. Its ultimate goal was to land a man on the Moon and bringing them back safely to Earth with all the rocks and soil examples aboard them. The Apollo spacecraft consists of the command module, the LEM(Lunar Excursion Module),and the huge rocket called the Saturn V rocket.

The first Apollo was the Apollo 1.Is was schedule to launch on the 21st of February 1967[3].The first astronauts where consist of astronauts Gus Grissom,Edward H.White and Roger B.Chaffee.But a tragic accident happened when the three where on a routine exercises aboard the command module[4].A voice called out “fire in the spacecraft!” And another one voice cried, “get us out of here!”. Wearing face masks and asbestos gloves, the technicians tried to open the hatch. But the technicians where driven back by the intense heat of the hatch. Six minutes after the first alarm, the technicians removed the hatch. But it was too later. All the three astronauts died ,because of the smoke and the intense heat. The tragedy stopped the Apollo program for two almost two years.

The Moon was indeed the goal of the Apollo program. On December 1986,the Apollo 8 was launched aboard a huge rocket called the Saturn V rcoket[5].This consists of three astronauts namely Frank Borman,James Loovell and William Anders. After the launch and more than three hours in Earth’s orbit. Both the ground crew and the astronauts where checking for a ‘GO/NO GO’ trajectory to the Moon. After the decision of the ground crew at Mission Control in Houston, the Apollo 8 is good to go. When the spacecraft came within a sight of Hawaii, the third stage of the Saturn V rocket was fired. It was the longest burn and it lasted for five minutes[6].This burn is what NASA called the TLI(Trans Lunar Injection)burn.

After the burn was done, the astronauts where traveling at a speed of 24,226 miles (39,000km) per hour. The most fastest speed that no human ever traveled before. By this time, the spacecraft is now approaching the Moon at a distance of 200,000 miles(320,000km) from Earth. The spacecraft begins to slows down at a rate of 1.4 feet(43 cm) per second and bringing the closest approach to the Moon at about 70 miles(112km).The astronauts where on a relief when they finally reached the Moon at a distance of 230,000 miles(368,000 km) from Earth. “The Moon is essentially gray and ,no color. Looks like a plaster of Paris. Sort of grayish sand“, said Lovell at mission control in Houston about 1.2 light seconds away[8].All the astronauts aboard the spacecraft where the first human beings who first look at the dark side of the Moon that we cannot see on Earth. The astronauts also broadcast a live TV show that was viewed in the morning by most of the nations all over the world[9].In a very tiring day, the astronauts ended the day with a big smile on their faces as they went to sleep. On the 27th of December 1968,the crew arrived to Earth and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean after one of the most fantastic and successful voyage in the history of mankind and the space exploration. The astronauts become as the inspirations to the next Apollo missions, to some students and to most of the nations in the world. The next mission to Apollo 8 was the Apollo 10,its a repetition of the Apollo 8.But with the complete modules and instruments aboard it. It is also a training mission for a landing on Apollo 11[10].

In the morning hours of July 16,1969,At exactly 9:37 am. The tall space vehicle called the Saturn V rocket was launched in Cape Canaveral in Florida[11]. 0nbourd where commander Neil Armstrong, command module pilot Michael Collins, and lunar module pilot, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.Twelve minutes after launch, the Apollo 11 was traveling at the speed of 17,400 miles per hour(mph) and 120 miles above Earth. The four day journey to the Moon, began with the burn called the TLI(Trans Lunar Injection) burn. For more than four days in the journey to the Moon. The Apollo 11 finally reached the Moon at a distance of 230,000 miles from Earth.

On July 20,1969,astronauts Neil Armstrong, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin aboard the lunar module. Then the lunar module separated from the command module, Columbia which Collins was onboard it. When all the systems, the astronauts, the engineers and scientists on Mission Control in Houston are ready. The astronauts prepare to land on the Moon. Approaching its landing, Armstrong looked outside and he saw large craters with huge rocks, but the computer onboard the lunar module was guiding them into it[12].With a computer problem,Armstrong relied on his trainings and took over and controlled the lunar module manually. But with only 25 second of fuel remaining, Armstrong must land the lunar module on the Moon or the mission will be aborted.Succesfully, with 25 seconds of fuel remaining, the lunar module has landed on the Moon. Armstrong said his famous words”Houston,Tranquility base is here. The Eagle has landed”[13].Then the astronauts suite up to prepare them from going outside the lunar module to make a historic first human step on the Moon. The first one to go out was Neil Armstrong with his most famous words,”it’s a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind”,Then Buzz Aldrin followed next. Their landing was broadcast world wide wide with millions of people watching them.

In the 21 hours and 36 minutes after the lunar landing, the astronauts began for preparation to re-enter the lunar module[14].After all the excitements and the trills, with over 700,000 miles of journey back and fort. The astronauts finally ended their more than 10 days of historic journey. With the inspiration of the Apollo 11,the Apollo program is not over yet. The next was the Apollo 12,it was the second manned lunar landing of the Apollo mission. The next mission to Apollo 12 was Apollo 13.It was launched on April 11,1970.This was consists of astronauts James A.Lovell,Jr.,John L.Swigert,Jr. and Fred W.Haise,Jr.But the mission was aborted to go land on the Moon, because of the loss of capability to generate electrical power, to provide oxygen and to produce water[15].The astronauts reached the Moon, but they didn’t land on it.Now,the astronauts are fighting for there lives to go home to Earth. After there problems are fixed, they the reached the Earth and they entered to the Earth’s atmosphere to end there dangerous journey to the Moon. More missions went back to the Moon and took more samples of the soil and rocks of the Moon back to Earth for studying. The very last mission was the Apollo 17,on December 19,1972.This was the very last mission to land a man on the Moon. No other missions went back to the Moon after the last landing of the Apollo 17.

For more than a decade, beginning in 1959,the Soviet Union made a concepted effort to be the first nation to land a man on the Moon[16].But the Soviets realized that they lost the race to the Moon to beat the Apollo 11.So they switched their main goal in manned spaceflight in establishing Salyut space stations and Soyuz spacecrafts to send crews and supplies for every missions. Also the Soviet sends robots, orbiters and return sample robots, not humans on the Moon[16].The Apollo program and the Soviet program where all successful in increasing our knowledge about the Moon and its features. We also prove to ourselves that we can go beyond our Earth’s orbit, manned or unmanned explorations.Someday, humans can land on Mars also to visit the stars and beyond everything our technologies can do today.

Lavander Sun by me

On June 26,2008.

I took this photo of the Sun that is color lavander. This made me to www.spaceweather.com,which is a great website.

California is on fire. Hundreds of wildfires in the northern half of the state are filling the air with smoke and filling the sky with ... lavender suns? Christopher Calubaquib saw one on June 26th when he looked through the haze over El Sobrante, California:

"Because of the smoke, the sun was not very bright, and I didn't need to use a filter to take the picture," says Calubaquib. In other words, the colors are genuine

My theory of the creation of the Universe

I think the Universe was created with a Big Bang, but with two primivial atom circling each other until they hit both each other. To create a Big Bang.
